Stoll Berne Attorneys Volunteer at Immigration Detention Center in Georgia

Stoll Berne attorneys Gary Berne, Tim DeJong, and Keith Ketterling each spent a week volunteering with the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI) of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in Lumpkin, Georgia. The attorneys interviewed detainees at the Stewart Detention Facility to assist in SIFI’s efforts to have qualified detainees released on bond or parole while awaiting removal proceedings, and drafted bond and parole motions. Immigrants with legal counsel are more than ten times more likely to succeed in their cases as detained immigrants without a lawyer, and only a small fraction of the 2,000 men and transgender women detained at Stewart have legal representation.
